The field of biotechnology involves the industrial application of living organisms and biological techniques developed through research.

Working in the field of biotechnology involves using living organisms, or their by-products, to make or modify a substance. Biotechnology techniques include the use of recombinant DNA techniques - more popularly known as genetic engineering - and hybridoma techniques.

Biotechnology is thus not without its critics, with many members of the general public being uncomfortable with work that changes what nature has produced.

Uses of these techniques are numerous, with applications including recombinant DNA or gene splicing - this allows us to produce synthetic hormones or enzymes by combining genetic material from different species.

The industrial products of this biological research include pharmaceutical compounds and research materials.
