Chemistry
Modern chemistry studies the composition, structure, and properties of substances and the changes they undergo?
While there's no dispute what chemistry is - the study of the composition, structure, and properties of substances and the changes they undergo - there is considerable debate about the origin of the word itself.
Chemistry as we now know it evolved from ancient work related to the extraction of medicinal juices from plants, of metals from their earths, and of course attempts at transmutation of physical elements - specifically attempts to turn base metals into gold.
The disputes arise when we turn to the origin of the name. Some believe it derives from the Greek chemeia, while others trace the origins back to the Egyptian keme (chem), meaning earth.
The modern field includes several different areas:
The structure and behaviour of atoms (elements)
The composition and properties of compounds
The reactions that occur between substances and the resultant energy exchange
The laws that unite these phenomena into a comprehensive system
This is a highly technical field with researchers requiring a constant supply of materials and equipment. From alkalis to dessicants, Powder Handling Equipment to Turbid meters, we have tracked down a range of essential supplies, and their suppliers.
