Software
Almost all businesses need software, but science and technology companies have a need for specialty programs.
The need for specialty software in the science industry has never been higher. As the technology of equipment and analysis increases, more and more processes are now performed on PCs.
Another factor is the increase in processing power of both mainframes and PCs, allowing them to run increasingly sophisticated software.
At the same time prices are falling, thus making these more efficient techniques more and more affordable.
The net result is that labs are able to automate many processes that were previously labour intensive, increasing efficiency and driving down costs - or at least that's the theory.
The downside is that some companies can monopolise the market - if they have a product that is in demand, prices can be outrageous. The key is, of course, competition.
If there are competing products, then the chances are that prices will fall. The key for the consumer is being up on the market, knowing what programs are available, and when a new product hits the market.
